Good with your hands? Lend one to the Sumner Gathering Space build sessions this weekend

Carpentry and construction on artwork for the Main Street Alley begins today, Friday, at 8 a.m., and continues on Saturday.

Pomegranate Center is seeking handy volunteers this weekend as it prepares for the construction of the Sumner Gathering Place and its subsequent installation in the alley between Berryland Cafe and the Alley on Main, on downtown Main Street.

The Gathering Space project is part of a four-city arts initiative, begun in May and funded by Tully’s Coffee Company, to build arts-centric public spaces. The projects are driven by volunteer designers and builders with only non-primary assistance from the governments of their home cities, if any.

In June, Pomegranate accepted more than 50 ideas from the public at-large regarding what the alley space should incorporate. A design committee whittled the list down to a few essentials, including sitting space, garden boxes, a staging area and rhubarb reminiscence. The alley design additionally features wooden post “trees” with metallic branches.

The whole project will come together beginning Friday. Pomegranate is inviting anyone to come to Heritage Park August 5-6 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to build, carve and construct the individual components of the gathering space, no experience is necessary.

The furniture and stage will be installed Sunday and Monday, also from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
