Heritage Quest, a non-profit genealogy library and book store, will be giving away a free year of membership to the submitter of the best photo that contains stalks of rhubarb. Entrants have until noon tomorrow, Thursday, to submit an old or new photo.

Photos must be 4 inches by 6 inches or larger. They will be on display in Heritage Quest’s 1007 Main Street location for the weekend Rhubarb Days festival.

Heritage Quest visitors will be allowed to vote for their favorite photo once per day Friday and Saturday. At 4 p.m. Saturday, names of two voters will be drawn and awarded memberships to the library.

“We haven’t been too involved with the Sumner Downtown Association in the past,” library director Jim Johnson said. “Now that we’re on Main Street, we want to be more involved, and we thought this was a fun way to do it.”

Heritage Quest uses its facilities to assist people in reconstructing their family lineage. The library contains hard copy historical records, instructional books on researching public records, and computers subscribed to genealogical research websites. They charge researchers $5 per day to use the facility, or $30 for a yearlong membership. Sales from the bookstore also support operations.

The library recently moved to a storefront location from a 900-square-foot space in the back of the building at 909 Main Street. The new space offers more than twice the space they had before, and has helped generate foot traffic, Johnson said.

“We’ve had 26 new members already this month,” he said. “We used to get two to three members a month.”
