The Bread of Life and Bonney Lake food banks are hoping for favorable weather when they kick off Hot August Nite, a summer fundraiser to benefit both organizations. The event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at Allan Yorke Park in Bonney Lake.

In keeping with its theme, Food Bank Director Stew Bowen said the lineup of events will feature something for everyone – from shows highlighting hotrods and Harley Davidson motorcycles to a hotdog-eating contest and live music by the Icicle River Band, with performances from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Sumner-based band features Ron Hampton, Archie Eltz and Bill Snow on a variety of instruments including the banjo and mandolin, six- and 12-string guitars, bass, steel guitars, keyboard and piano.

Hot dog meals will be sold for $5 and from 2 to 4 p.m.

Attendees will also have the chance to make monetary donations or pledges, Bowen said.

If past support of the nonprofit organizations is any indication – both food banks have been recipients of generous areawide food drives – Bowen is confident the fundraiser will be a hit.

“Between the two food banks, we’re serving somewhere between 800 families a month,” he said. “That’s about 9,600 services, not including the summer lunch programs. This is our first fundraiser and we hope to make it an annual community event.”
