Local residents will see purple

Residents of Sumner and Bonney Lake will soon be seeing a lot of purple in their neighborhoods.

In a fundraising effort for Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society event now in its 25th year, relay members are participating in “Paint the Town Purple” day.

On June 24, relay team members will stand near intersections wearing purple and requesting donations during morning and afternoon rush hour times.

The collection event is called “curbing for cancer” and the three intersections in each community, team members will be asking for donations to support their fundraising efforts. Volunteers will be out during the hours of 6:30 to 8 a.m. and 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Intersections in Bonney Lake include the corner of state Route 410 and Sumner/Buckley Highway, the corner of SR 410 and South Prairie Road, and the corner of SR 410 and 214th Avenue. In Sumner, teams will be located at the corner of Valley Avenue and Main Street, the corner of Main Street and Traffic Avenue and the corner of Valley Avenue and Thompson Street.

At the Sumner City Council meeting June 1, Sumner/Bonney Lake Relay for Life Chairperson Nani Bracken presented a proclamation to council declaring June 24 Paint the Town Purple Day.

The Sumner/Bonney Lake Relay for Life Team has been in the fight against cancer since 1999 and the team has the distinction of placing within the top 10 highest-earning relays per capita.
