Model T fanciers have fun, are seeking friends

Members of the Carbon Canyon Model T Club enjoy their vintage cars, love to have a good time and are hoping to bring others into their happy group.

“During the last few years we really have grown,” said Renee Watters, who serves as secretary/treasurer for the club, which now boasts more than 40 members. Two more were welcomed during a recent meeting, she added.

Much of the club hails from the Plateau, although a few have joined from throughout the South Puget Sound area. The one thing that binds all members is an appreciation for “the care that put the world on wheels.” Members meet once a month for breakfast, with many driving the vintage autos, and mechanically-inclined members can often be found in someone’s garage, doing their best to keep a classic American icon in running shape.

Watters knows there are a lot of Model Ts sitting around – she sees them in garages throughout the area – and she wants to all those owners to know they’re wanted. The Carbon Canyon Model T Club has expanded its scope a bit and also takes in owners of Model As, the vehicle produces for a few years after Ford discontinued the Model T in 1927.

Aside from their information club gatherings, the Carbon Canyon group makes annual appearances in Buckley’s Log Show parade and the Wilkeson parade during the weekend of the handcar races. In recent years, members of the club have driven their cars to Enumclaw’s High Point Village, where senior citizens enjoy getting a look at one of the restored gems – or sometimes getting a ride. Saturday, club members entered their cars in Orting’s revived Red Hat Days celebration

“We really spread ourselves around,” Watters said.
