Maintenance work by King County continues along a dozen miles of levees that protect the cities of Renton, Tukwila and Kent from Green River flooding. This work requires temporary, intermittent closures of sections of the Green River Trail, which sits atop the levee system through the Green River Valley.

Upcoming closures:

• Aug. 10-13, with a possible extension to Aug. 14: The Green River Trail in Kent will be closed from South 262nd (Alder Lane) to the Green River Road trailhead. This stretch of trail will reopen for the weekend of Aug. 15-16, however portions of the trail could still have unpaved surfaces, and trail users are urged to use caution.

• The trail segment between State Route 181 and the trail bridge south of South 180th Street is closed by the City of Kent and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for levee reconstruction.

As work moves forward, the location of current and upcoming closures will be posted at www.kingcounty.gov/rivers. Trail users are encouraged to sign up for weekly updates or follow #GreenRiverTrail @KCDNRP on Twitter and “like” the King County RiversFacebook page for current and upcoming closure schedule.

King County crews are repairing damaged portions of levees, replacing stormwater infrastructure, removing stumps, hedges and debris, and performing other needed maintenance work. Maintenance is required to improve levee integrity and allow safety inspections of the levees.

Trail closures will occur in various locations and for times ranging from one day to as long as a few weeks, and the work will continue into 2016. General notification signs will be posted at major trail access points and trail closure signs will be posted at either end of active work areas.

Additionally, work by the City of Kent and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for most of the summer for Green River levee improvements means the stretch of Green River Trail between State Route 181 and the trail bridge south of South 180th Street will be closed.
