Sumner City Councilman Matthew Richardson is running against Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow for the mayoral position.

Sumner City Councilman Matthew Richardson is running against Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow for the mayoral position.

Richardson filed for candidacy with the Pierce County Auditor’s office on Friday.

Richardson stated his time serving on Sumner City Council, the Pierce County Regional Council and as deputy mayor of Sumner in the past provide him with the experience needed to be mayor.

He stated a priority for him is maintaining Sumner’s way of life.

“I think that every mayor of Sumner from this point forward is going to need more experience if we’re going to preserve our unique quality of life,” he said.

Richardson stated one of the reasons he’s running is his disagreement on past policy decisions, citing a proposed Manufacturing and Industrial Center zoning overlay to 2,200 acres of North Sumner.

“That’s almost every inch of Sumner from Elm Street to our northern border, including the golf course, the trail, and its future park on the river,” he stated.

Councilmember Ed Hannus is running for Sumner Council position 1 against Stuart L. Scheuerman.

Councilmember Randy Hynek is running for Sumner Council position 2.

Councilmember Steve Allsop is running for Sumner Council position 3 against Jon B. Swanson.
