Plans to open the new lanes on the Eastown section of state Route 410 by Saturday have hit a snag: bad weather.

According to an e-mail from Bonney Lake Public Works Director Dan Grigsby, the recent spate of rainy weather has pushed completion dates for the project until later this fall at the earliest.

“The weather hasn’t favored us,” agreed WSDOT spokesperson MaryLou Nebergall.

Originally, the widening of SR 410 to four lanes was supposed to be complete by Oct. 1, but the rain has pushed that off until at least early December. Median islands and street lighting, however, are expected to be completed by the end of November.

Construction of the 234th Avenue alignment with 233rd Avenue also has also been delayed by the weather and there is no indication of when that project, which is set to include a new traffic light, will be completed.

“It’s really weather-dependent,” Nebergall said.

Nebergall said soils in the area are highly susceptible to rain and need to dry some before completion of the project.

She remained positive, however, that though the final asphalt overlay may not be completed until the spring, all four lanes of the new section of 410 are expected to be open this year, as will the new traffic light.

Nebergall said WSDOT does not lay asphalt between Oct. 1 and April 1 due to the weather.

In total, the $29 million, 1.49-mile project adds one lane in each direction of 410 from 234th Avenue to 214th Avenue with a raised median separating eastbound and westbound traffic.

The project also includes infrastructure improvements like stormwater treatment facilities, lighting and bus stop improvements.
