Pierce County READS continues Saturday with Sumi painting—the ancient practice of art in ink—at the Sumner Pierce County Library.

The lesson will begin at 2 p.m. and will be taught by various South Puget Sound artists.

Sumi painting uses black ink, a brush and water dilution to achieve lighter shades of gray.

Developed in the Chinese Tang Dynasty, the goal of ink wash painting in the East Asian tradition was to capture a subject’s soul above its fine details.

This year, Pierce County READS focuses on the book “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” a WWII period novel by Jamie Ford about a boy trying to grow up Chinese-American.
