After a series of hearings spanning several months, the Sumner City Council reached a decision on whether to uphold a hearing examiner’s decision to grant Calvary Community Church a contemporary use permit.

Council instructed Sumner’s city attorney, Brett Vinson, to prepare findings of fact to uphold the decision, but only for phase one of the church’s expansion project.

Phase I of the project includes an increase in the main church building. Other changes were planned for later.

The examiner granted the permit in February and appeals were filed by some residents. Calvary Community Church is located at 1516 Gary Street and some citizens claimed an expansion of the facility would lead to heavier traffic in the area. An appeal hearing began in June and council deliberated and continued the hearing throughout several meetings over the summer.

The new findings are scheduled to be presented to council for potential adoption Oct. 19 in the form of a resolution.
