Sumner man killed in single-car accident

A Sumner man was killed after the car he was traveling in left the highway and slammed into a tree June 10.

A Sumner man was killed after the car he was traveling in left the highway and slammed into a tree June 10.

The Washington State Patrol reported Michael J. McGowan, 26, died at the scene. The accident occured on state Route 167, just south of the state Route 512 junction about 7:45 p.m.

McGowen was riding in a 1992 Acura coupe that was traveling southbound on SR 167.

The driver, a 46-year-old Federal Way man, was booked into the Pierce County Jail June 11 on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

He was treated at the scene then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, according to troopers.

The driver is under investigation for vehicular homicide, WSP reported.

The accident slowed down traffic on the southbound lanes of SR 167 and the eastbound lane of SR 512 on-ramp to southbound 167. All lanes were reopen at 11:45 p.m.

A 71-year-old man was injured during a two-vehicle accident June 6 on state Route 167 near Sumner.

The Washington State Patrol reported a 1999 Ford truck driven by Otto C. Dobias of Sumner was traveling northbound on SR 167 when it struck a southbound 2002 Chevrolet truck around 7 p.m.

Dobias was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. He was wearing his seat belt, the WSP reported.

Oriana Griego, 25, of Tacoma was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center and his passenger, 39-yeart-old Carla Covington of Tacoma, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lakewood.

Griego and Covington were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.

The case is still under investigation.
