Sumner is participating in Pierce County READS, a program in which the same book title is read throughout the community.

Last year’s book selection for the READS program was “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time” and 900 people attended the event featuring the author, David Oliver Relin.

This year’s book is “Garlic and Sapphires” by Ruth Reichl. It details the author’s six-year journey of reviewing New York restaurants.

Reichl will speak and sign books at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood at 7 p.m. March 27.

A group discussion of “Garlic and Sapphires” is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bonney Lake Library.

A librarian will lead the discussion, which is for young adults and older, in which people may exchange opinions and ask questions about the READS selection. In keeping with the book’s subject, he event may include sharing recipes, stories and menus, according to the library system’s desciription.

Attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation in support of a Pierce County READS com.
