Sumner schools to stay closed Wednesday

The Sumner School District has officially canceled school for Wednesday, Nov. 24.

According to Communications Director Ann Cook, the district made the determination because cold weather expected tonight will not give roads a chance to clear up before buses would have to head out in the morning.

“With the low temperatures for tonight, we don’t anticipate there will be enough improvement in the road conditions by tomorrow morning,” Cook said.

According to Cook, even with a delay, which on Wednesday would be a 90-minute delay, the first buses would still hit the streets “well before we think they’ll be safe.”

Several of the roads throughout the district remain covered in ice and Forest Canyon Road was still closed as of Tuesday afternoon.

“We think it’s a good idea not to put our drivers and kids on the roads,” she said.

Cook said Wednesday was scheduled as a teacher workday for elementary schools so students in grades K-5 would not have been in anyway.

Sumner schools delayed opened Monday and then sent kids home about an hour early as the snow picked up through the day. Schools were closed Tuesday as well, making it an easy Thanksgiving week for most, with school already closed Thursday and Friday for the holiday.

Cook said the Tuesday would have to be made up, as would Wednesday for middle school and high school students, but the 2010-2011 factored in two closure days. The make-up days will be determined after the winter.

“At this point we’re not looking at extending the school year,” Cook said.
