A 19-year-old Tacoma man was arrested after he called 911 to report the vehicle he stole ran out of gas and was disabled on the shoulder of state Route 167, reported the Washington State Patrol.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. Dec. 29, a City Transfer employee was traveling southbound on SR 167 when he spotted the silver 1985 Chevy Truck that was stolen from City Transfer Inc. in Sumner. The truck was occupied and disabled on the left shoulder just north of 180th Street in Renton.

Just minutes after the employee called police, the driver of the truck, Jesse Rodriguez, called 911 to report the vehicle had run out of gas.

Troopers contacted Rodriguez who attempted to disguise himself as a City Transfer employee by wearing a fluorescent green reflectorized vest he found in the truck.

The truck became disabled after Rodriguez filled the tank with unleaded gasoline, instead of diesel.

Investigators said a City Transfer employee witnessed Rodriguez steal the truck from the yard at approximately 5:30 a.m. and was able to identify him at the scene.

Rodriguez was booked into the King County Jail for auto theft and the vehicle was released to City Transfer.
