The Enumclaw Education Association is asking community members to “Wear Red for Ed” Nov. 28 to show their support for public education.

EEA President Mike Sando said Monday was selected because it is the first day of a special legislative session designed to balance the state budget and there are substantial cuts to education being considered.

“We are asking our members to don red on that Monday to show their commitment to our kids and their future,” Westwood Elementary teacher Tara Myers said. “We would also welcome anyone in our community that supports education to join us and ‘Wear Red for Ed’ on Monday.”

During the teachers’ state meetings in the spring, delegates called for a statewide day of action to voice the concern over cuts to education. Rather than take the day and head to Olympia, local teacher associations in this area sought a positive way to take their concerns to the public that would not cause disruptions in local schools.

“We know that we are facing some tough decisions this year and we should recognize that any further cuts in education will have a negative effect on our economic future,” Sunrise Elementary teacher and EEA Vice President Diane Hammons said. “This is our way of elevating our concern in a positive way.”
