Sumner battled Sehome and Squalicum head-to-head through the night.

The evening started with a bang, as the 200-yard medley relay set a school record on its way to a second-place finish. Alicia Ditty, Ashley Huynh, Madison Munger and Sami Hendricks raced to a 1-minute, 53.74-second finish behind Squalicum, bettering their own Sumner High record set in preliminaries Friday.

Munger turned around and jumped back into the water, following up with an individual state crown in the 200 freestyle. The sophomore, who earned a state title in the 200 individual medley last year, sprinted to a school record 1:57.03, erasing the 1976 previous record of 1:57.92 set by Shannon Phelan.

Spartan teammate Kallan Gustafson finished ninth, dropping two seconds off her preliminary time for a 2:05.16.

The Spartans took their first lead of the night and were able to hold on through the 200 individual medley thanks to Ditty and Huynh who placed 10th and 14th respectively.

Hendricks sprinted to a third-place, 24.57 finish in the 50 freestyle to boost the Spartans lead to 19 points heading into diving.

The Spartans offered no divers. Squalicum entered two in the finals and Sehome had four. When the round finished, Squalicum had taken the lead and Sehome and Sumner were tied for second.

Munger brought the Spartans back into the lead with her third-place 1:00.90 finish in the 100 butterfly and Hendricks kept it going with a 53.77 fourth-place 100 freestyle.

Despite points from Gustafson’s 15th place 500 freestyle finish, Squalicum and Sehome jumped ahead of the Spartans.

Sumner rallied with its 200 freestyle relay victory.

Munger, Huynh, Elizabeth Martin and Hendricks defended the Spartans’ 2010 state championship with an electric 1:42.66 finish, knocking nearly a second off their preliminary time. Hendricks, in the No. 4 position, posted a 23.78 on her 50-yard sprint.

The Spartan lead was short lived. Sehome bounced back into the lead after the backstroke and breaststroke and Squalicum and Sehome finished 1-2 in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay to take the title and second place, respectively.

In a close race, Sehome won with 223 points. Squalicum finished with 212 and Sumner finished third with 192.

The Spartans threw everything they had at the leaders. Ditty raced to a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.69 and Huynh scored a seventh-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.35.

Gustafson, Martin, Alejandra Castro and Ditty teamed up to post a 15th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:05.12.

Of the state qualifiers, Hendricks and Castro are the lone seniors.
