Drivers should get ready for a big change at the intersection of state Route 410 and Watson Street in Enumclaw.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation are putting the final touches on a new traffic signal and crosswalks at the intersection.

The new signal is scheduled to begin operation by 5 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8.

In preparation for the activation, the Washington State Patrol will direct traffic through the intersection from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 to 5 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 as final tests and adjustments are completed. Activation is dependent on the new signal performing properly during the testing period.

The new traffic signal is being installed after traffic studies showed traffic volumes are steadily increasing through the intersection and a traffic signal with dedicated turn arrows is needed to preserve driver and pedestrian safety.

In addition to the new signal, crews repaved a 1.5 mile section of SR 164 (Griffin Avenue) between High Point Street and SR 410. They also upgraded more than 90 pedestrian ramps to current ADA standards.
