The White River Bridge between Enumclaw and Buckley is closed.
The bridged closed Aug. 18, after a large vehicle hit the top of the structure in multiple areas.
No injuries were reported, but there is also no estimated time for the bridge to be re-opened, so drivers are encouraged to detour via State Route 164, State Route 18, State Route 167 and SR 410.
The bridge was closed in 2015 when a truck hit an overhead beam. It was closed for a few days while emergency repairs were made shortly after, but it was closed for another full five days in 2016 for permanent repairs.
While crews were still out determining the extent of the damage, a photo on social media is falsely claiming the bridge will be closed for at least a year.
“The historic Enumclaw-Buckley bridge, a vital link across the White River, will be closed to all traffic beginning this month as crews prepare for a full-scale rebuild,” the photo reads, appearing as a “staff report” from an unidentified publication (not The Courier-Herald). “Officials announced that the project is expected to last until late 2026, requiring drivers to find alternate routes during the lengthy closure.”
WSDOT quickly tamped down this rumor.
“We haven’t said anything like that,” said spokesperson RB McKeon in an interview shortly after this photos starting making the rounds on social media pages and in the comments; she added that crews haven’t made any determination on damage, necessary repairs, or a closure timeline as of 2 p.m.
This is an ongoing story.
