Norman Arnold Payne, 84, died Feb. 24, 2017, in Black Diamond.

He was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Corval-lis, Ore., to George and Zelda Payne . He lived in Black Diamond for the past 11 years and for many years before that in Troutdale and Gresham, Ore. He graduated in 1951 from Gresham High School, where he played football and baseball. In the Army, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he met and married Irene Jane Payne (1935-2011). He was honorably discharged in 1955. He graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in grocery sciences. He worked for Fred Meyer, Topco, IGA and State Farm, where he retired in 1998. He loved the Oregon Coast, travel, and being with friends and family. He was passionate about competitive swimming, Linfield College football and Civil War history.

He is survived by children Jeffrey Payne (Betsy), Jennifer Huserik (Randall) and John Payne (Christine) and six grandchildren.

A memorial service with military honors is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. A reception is planned for 11 a.m. at the Monarch Hotel in Clackamas, Ore.

Arrangements are by Weeks’ Enumclaw Funeral Home.
