Once again Bonney Lake High is in the 16-team Class 3A state soccer tournament.
Savanna Moorehouse and Emily Martin scored early and goalkeeper Rendi Johnson recorded her second shutout in the playoffs as the Panthers beat South Puget Sound League 3A rival Peninsula 2-0 Saturday in the West Central III/Southwest IV District tournament at Highline Stadium in Burien.
With the win, Bonney Lake clinched the WCD III/Southwest IV No. 1 seed into the state tournament. Their first-round match was against WCD III/Southwest IV No. 8 Camas Tuesday at Sunset Chev Stadium; results were not available for this issue but will be posted at cmg-northwest2.go-vip.net/courierherald.
Most of the game was played in in rain with gusts of wind and an occasional break of sunshine.
Bonney Lake was able to build its lead early.
The Panthers’ goals came within a minute of each other. Moorehouse, the team’s leading scorer and SPSL 3A Most Valuable Player, drilled a kick in the 11th minute of play.
“Savanna has an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time,” coach Luke Helling-Christy said. “She’s able to see what’s going on the field before it develops.”
Martin scored in the 12th minute.
“We’re playing well and the girls seem to be in a pretty good groove now,” Helling-Christy said. “We knew what to expect from Peninsula after we got an early lead.”
Earlier this season, the Panthers shut out Peninsula 3-0.
Helling-Christy said he and his team set their expectations high this season after the Panthers lost in the first round to Mount Si, 2-1, during the 2008 state tournament.
“We know what it will take to win in the tournament,” Helling-Christy said. “The Kennedy game was a good win for us. It’s better to have that experience early in the playoffs. They know what it takes physically to win in a shootout.”
Bonney Lake improved to 14-1-2.
Bonney Lake took the SPSL/Seamount 3A subdistrict No. 1 seed with a 1-0 shootout win over Kennedy Catholic Nov. 4 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
In the first round of penalty kicks for the Panthers, Haylie Cannon, Brianne Jones, Moorehouse, Beverly Kobe and Carly Mingo drilled all five attempts as both teams tied.
In the second round, Jenny Dewitz and Alicia Bowman scored, as Kennedy’s Dee Dee Green’s shot hit the bar.
It was Kennedy’s first loss this season.
