The Bonney Lake High School girls tennis season came to a close Friday at the subdistrict tournament as the Panthers’ No. 1 doubles team of Alise and Emily McCoy came up just short in their bid to qualify for Class 3A state action.

The McCoy sisters, who missed playing in last year’s state tournament by one win, made their way into Friday’s matches needing a single victory.

The tournament got started May 18 with the McCoys defeating Alexis Gregerson and Dorothy Franks of Highline 6-4, 6-3.

But having rolled through their first round match to get to Friday, the McCoy sisters had what coach Billy Jacobsen described as an “off day” at just the wrong time, dropping both matches and missing the state tournament by a single win for the second straight year.

The McCoys first ran into the Enumclaw team of Anna Nelson and Lauren Redman, falling 2-6, 1-6 and then dropped their late match against Annika Sumpter and Madison Scwartz of Camas 4-6, 1-6.

“I was expecting them to go to state this year,” Jacobsen said in an e-mail.

The McCoys were the only Panther players to qualify for the district tournament.
