EHS BOYS SWIM: Hornets return to water Jan. 7

When the Enumclaw High boys swim team dives back into the South Puget Sound League 3A season Jan. 7 with Bonney Lake in the Panthers’ home pool in Sumner, they will bring a 2-1 league record with them thanks to a 94-92 win over Lakes Dec. 17.

The Hornets’ single loss came at the hands of Peninsula, 109-77, Dec. 15.

With a number of swimmers out with injuries or illness, the Hornets managed to squeak out a two-point win over Lakes.

The Hornets’ 200-yard medley relay kicked off the meet with a win.

Gabe Sales and Bennon VanHoof followed it up with back-to-back second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively. Fellow Hornet Shane Jackson captured third in the 200 IM.

With a Lancer at his feet, EHS’s Will Cooper won the 50 freestyle.

Garrett Hall, Ben Schimming and Thomas Petersen swept the diving, finishing first, second and third, respectively.

Jackson placed third in the 100 butterfly, while Braden Dedrick came in second in the 100 freestyle. Cooper won the 500 freestyle with Sales placing second for the Hornets.

Petersen won the 100 backstroke, with teammate Travis Culp finishing third; both posted district-qualifying times.

VanHoof is getting closer to a state time in his 100 breaststroke. The EHS freshman placed first in the event with Logan Ross taking third.

The meet came down to the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, with the Hornets needing to place at least second to edge past Lakes for the win. Petersen, Culp, Sales and Dedrick had no trouble making it happen.

“For our first away meet, our swimmers did really well, especially for competing in a meter pool, which is a bit longer than our yard pool,” coach Ann Bettencourt said.

Against Peninsula, the Hornets’ scored second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Cooper raced to a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Schimming won the diving with Hall finishing third.

In the 100 butterfly, Jackson, Culp and Jeremy McCarthy placed second, third and fourth, respectively.

Cooper won the 400 freestyle, while Petersen, Culp and Sales were second, third and fourth in the 100 backstroke. VanHoof out-touched his opponent to win the 100 breaststroke.
