Facing some of the toughest competition the state has to offer, the Enumclaw High wrestling team finished fifth Saturday at the Central Kitsap Mat Man tournament behind top-ranked Orting.

Josh Musick claimed the Hornets’ lone title.

“Our goal was to be in the top five,” coach Lee Reichert said. “Orting is the No. 1 team in all divisions. Lake Stevens is No. 2 in all divisions. The competition was every way as good as Pac-Coast. We hung right in there.”

Reichert said it was a good experience for the younger wrestlers, who showed positive growth.

Orting won the tournament with 207 points, followed by Graham-Kapowsin, 161.5, Lake Stevens, 161, Rogers, 147, and Enumclaw, 142.

Musick captured his 152-pound crown with a 2-0 decision over Dylan Evanger of Graham-Kapowsin. Hornet Kario Wallin was runner-up at 160 pounds. He went toe-to-toe with top-ranked Jacob Anderson of Lake Stevens until the final round when Anderson caught him and pinned him.

Enumclaw scored a slew of third-place finishes, starting with Travis Reano at 119 pounds, who was replacing an ill Cole Snider. Hunter File took third at 125 pounds with both he and Reano’s losses at the hands of eventual champions. Lucas Somera was third at 130. Chance Mitchell and Steven Knapp were the other two third-place finishers, Mitchell wrestling at 145 pounds and Knapp at 215.

Sophomore Colton Malek at 171 pounds finished fifth.

The Hornets bumped up their South Puget Sound League 3A record to a perfect 5-0 with a 84-0 victory over Clover Park Jan. 13. The Hornets will try to extend their league winning streak to 30 tonight, Wednesday, at Bonney Lake. The team is scheduled to host Franklin Pierce Thursday and then head to Spokane for the Dream Duals team competition Saturday.
