Sumner High girls basketball team took the first lead of the game, but district rival Bonney Lake took over after that for a 67-46 win in South Puget Sound League 3A action Thursday at home.
Both teams will advance to the subdistrict tournament with the Seamount League at Foster High in Tukwila. The Panthers are scheduled to play Mount Rainier at 5:30 p.m. Friday for the No. 3 and 4 seed at West Central District, while Sumner will face Foster 3:30 p.m. Friday in a loser-out game. Thursday, Sumner’s Kendall Theden scored first on a short jumper before the Panthers reeled off seven unanswered points – highlighted by Brittany Kennedy’s 3-pointer.
The Spartans answered with Angie Wager-Sanchez’s put back and a pair of free throws by Erika Olsen to cut the margin by one, 7-6.
But that was as close as the Spartans would get.
Emily McCoy’s jumper started a 10-4 run which resulted in a 17-10. During the stretch, Cheyann Clark pumped in five points, including a 3-pointer.
Marcel Pounds, Bonney Lake’s first player to score more than 1,000 points in a career, had trouble nailing down her trademark 3-pointer in the first quarter, but in the second period she answered with a pair of 3-pointers and finished the first half with 13 of her game-high 30 points.
The Panthers led 34-23 at halftime.
Kennedy finished the game with 12 points. Three players – Rochelle Murray, Carli Elwin and Clark – added six apiece.
Olsen led Sumner with 15 points and Wager-Sanchez added eight.
Bonney Lake finished second in the league with a 13-3 mark, 16-4 overall. Sumner took fifth at 10-6, 12-8 overall.
