GIRLS BASKETBALL: Bonney Lake hands Auburn Mountainview 20-point loss

Marcel Pounds poured in 25 points in the Panthers’ 59-39 South Puget Sound 3A action.

The last time Bonney Lake and the Auburn Mountainview girls were on the hardwood was during last season’s Class 3A West Central District tournament. Auburn Mountainview defeated the Panthers, 59-52, in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at Auburn High School.

Brittany Kennedy drilled in four 3-pointer to help give the Panthers a 18-6 lead after the first period of play. The senior guard connected on 4-of-5 from the arch for all of her points.

But the Lions roared back in the second quarter with a 15-6 run capped by Caitlin Carr’s 3-pointer at the end of the first half.

In the second half, Bonney Lake slowly added to their margin.

Tiara Kilmer scored off an offense rebound, then scored on a Carli Elwin assist for a 30-21 lead.

The Lions responded with a 3-pointers and long jumper to pull to within four, 30-26, their closest margin since early in the first.

Pounds hit a 3-pointer, then went inside for a layup and scored off a steal to help increase the Panther lead to nine, 41-30 to end the third.

Rani Wiegard started off the final period with a 3-pointer and things for the Lions went downhill from there.

After a pair of Kilmer free throws, Pounds scored seven straight points – four off steals.and a 3-point basket for a comfortable 53-35 margin with less than five minutes to play.
