GIRLS BASKETBALL: Bonney Lake off to 3-0 start

The Panthers started with a 63-44 win over North Thurston Dec. 1, ripped Enumclaw 69-38 on Dec. 4 and downed Timberline 60-49 Dec. 5.

In the season-opening, home-court win over North Thurston, Marcel Pounds scored a game-high 20 points and Brittany Kennedy chipped in 17.

Bonney Lake jumped out to a 14-8, first-period lead behind eight points from Pounds.

North Thurston cut the lead to 14-10, but the Panthers answered with a bucket and Naomi Pounds then stole the ball, scored on a layup and was fouled. Her free throw increased the Panthers’ margin to 19-10 midway in the second period.

Kennedy’s 3-point basket at the buzzer gave Bonney Lake a 13-point halftime lead, 29-16.

Bonney Lake built its lead but North Thurston whittled it away, using a short jumper to cut the Panthers’ lead to 37-27 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

After a Bonney Lake timeout, the Panthers responded as Rani Wiegard was fouled and sank a free throw, Kennedy hit her third 3-point bucket and Wiegard scored inside.

Rochelle Murray finished the game with a team-high 11 points.

During Friday’s South Puget Sound League 3A opener on the road, Marcel Pounds tossed in a game-high 22 points against the Hornets.

Bonney Lake jumped out to a 18-5 first-period lead and never looked back, holding Enumclaw to 18 points in the second half.

Murray chipped in 15 points in the win and Wiegard added 10.

Against Timberline Saturday, Marcel Pounds hit a season-high 23 points and Kennedy tossed in 11.
