GIRLS SOCCER: Sumner battles 4A powerhouse Bellarmine Prep to a scoreless tie

Goalkeeper Jordan Swarthout stopped 10 shots as the Sumner Spartans tied powerhouse Bellarmine Prep 0-0 in non-league play Sept. 22 at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Bellarmine Prep, who has won five state titles in 22 state tournament appearance, came into the game ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, while the Spartans are unranked in the 3A polls.

“For us it was a win-win situation,” said head coach Robi Turley. “Bellarmine Prep is one of the stop teams in the state and has won numerous league and state titles. We really haven’t been challenged yet, but this was a good test for us.”

Turley said she talked to her team before the game and to mentally prepare for the game.

“We has to be mentally prepare for such a great team like Bellarmine Prep,” said Turley.

In the 65th minute of play, Sumner’s Kaylee Holloway drove the ball inside the penalty box, then passed the ball to forward Brenna Allsop, whose kick barely missed its mark.

Less than two minutes later, Holloway slipped passed the Bellarmine Prep defense towards the goal, but slipped inside the goal box.

The Lions got two free kicks in the 67th and 70th minute of play, but were unable to score.

“We really stressed playing team defense and not letting their offense get behind us,” said Turley.

Bellarmine Prep’s last shot at goal was in the 76th minute as Swarthout jumped up to stop an attempt.

Sumner had eight shots at goal.

The Spartans will host Yelm Sept. 24, then play at another 4A team, Stadium, at 1 p.m. Sept. 26 in Stadium Bowl.
