To be the best, you have to play the best. That line of thinking meshes perfectly with the White River High girls basketball team, which appears Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A state tournament. Game time is 3:45 p.m. in Yakima’s SunDome.
The White River girls basketball team moved to the final eight at the 2A state tournament after beating Blaine 60-51 in the regional tournament.
After a sensational racing season at Emerald Downs where he was unbeaten in a trio of stakes, including the 79th running of the Longacres Mile (G3), as well as two stakes placings on the always tough California circuit, Mona and Jim Hour’s Stryker Phd was a popular choice for both older handicap and horse of the year honors.
The Sumner girls basketball team ended its season as one of the Sweet 16 at the state regional tournament.
White River’s boys (11-13), coached by Rick Tripp, will square off against Squalicum High (16-7), the No. 3 seed from District 1. The girls (21-3), under coach Chris Gibson, will take on the Blaine Borderites (12-12), also District 1’s No. 3 seed.
A 29-race stakes schedule featuring the 80th renewal of the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3), three stakes double-headers and Washington Cup XIII has been announced for the 2015 season at Emerald Downs.
Sumner’s next game is at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 against West Seattle at Renton High School.
KC Moulden, a senior at Enumclaw High School, was nominated by a community member and selected by WIAA staff as one of the Athletes of the Week for her in wrestling.
The Enumclaw High boys wrestling team reached the top of world at the Mat Classic state tournament Saturday winning the 3A crown. The team won the state title in a tight race with North Central that went down to the wire. The Hornets pulled it out scoring 110 points to 108.5 for North Central. The team took home an individual state crown, one second, two third place finishes and a fourth.
KC Moulden won her third consecutive wrestling title at the Mat Classic Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Moulden pinned Sophia Munoz from Highline in 1:38. Moulden pinned Amber Cramsey-Behnke in 1 minute, 19 seconds in the first round.
The Enumclaw gymnastic team took second at the state championship Friday at the Tacoma Dome and three gymnasts placed in the individual events Saturday. The Enumclaw gymnastic team finished second as team scoring 172.575. Kamiakin with 174.650 took first.

By winning three of four district games, both the White River High boys and girls basketball teams landed in the state Sweet 16. For each, the opening round of what historically was the state tournament takes place Saturday at Puyallup High School. The Hornet boys take the floor at noon and the girls follow at 2 p.m.
