Enumclaw’s Jade Paterson finished second in the 13- to 14-year-old division at the Continental Crown judo tournament at Highline College Saturday.

Paterson and teammates competed against athletes from across the continental United States, British Columbia, Indonesia and Alaska. This was a national event with some of the top competitors vying for a position on the Olympic team in 2012.

Paterson also moved up to the Novice 17-and-older division and placed second and competed in the Women’s Open Division. Her only two losses were to Canada’s national competitor Lisa Nakajima and Allison Clifford from San Jose College. Paterson placed third in the Women’s Open Division.

Enumclaw’s Gavin Severson placed third in the 15- to 16-year-old division. He also competed in the Novice 17-and-older division, but was injured in the quarterfinals and could not continue.

The annual team competition between Canada and the United States was won by the Americans, made up of local elite athletes. Coach Ben Goucher from Bushikan Dojo of Spanaway, Wash., accepted the team trophy.

“This was a great opportunity for the players in Washington to compete and measure themselves at this caliber of competition,” Enumclaw coach Mike Nepper said.
