The Sumner High boys collected their second basketball victory of the season Saturday, when they visited a winless Seahawk squad at Peninsula High and emerged with an 89-82 overtime win.

Sumner was shorthanded, having entered the fray missing four players who had fallen ill just prior to the road trip. Then, three more players were hurt during the game and did not return to action.

“We were kind of banged up and shorthanded by that overtime period,” Sumner’s coach Brett McDaniel said after handing Peninsula a setback for the second time this season.

“I was really proud of our senior guard Mike Murphy,” McDaniel said. “He shook off a foot injury that he sustained in the first quarter and limped through the remainder of the contest to score 26 points and collect a dozen rebounds.” McDaniel added that the DeVries twins, Dan and Dave, filled in admirably in the game’s late going as they each scored 12 points.

Sophomore post Zeb Glissmeyer shouldered the offensive load as he was determined to penetrate inside on the scrappy Peninsula defensive corps and accumulated 16 hard-earned points.

Friday, Sumner lost 70-49 to league-leading Enumclaw, but McDaniel noted that his bunch had played a better game than when these two teams faced one another in early December and Sumner lost 69-29.

“I kind of felt as though Enumclaw had to leave its starters in a bit longer this time around to assure the win,” McDaniel said, adding that his young bunch has been improving a little more with every game.

Sumner had three players in double digits against EHS, as Murphy, Brian Judkins and Jared Lewis scored 11 points each.

Sumner was searching for win No. 3 when it played host to Clover Park Tuesday; results came too late to include here but will be posted at www.blscourierherald.com. The Spartans will hit Auburn Mountainview’s hardwood at 7 p.m. Friday.
