SHS BOYS SWIM: Quaschnik scores big on board and in water

The Sumner Spartans’ 112-54 loss to Peninsula Jan. 21 was highlighted by the diving duo of Evan Quaschnik and Curtis Downing, according to coach Dana Powers.

Quaschnik won the diving competition with a season-high 186.75 points. He also was part of the second-place 200 medley relay along with Sam Rigsby, Tristan Hanon and Downing, who raced the anchor leg.

Zane Gustafson placed third in the 200 freestyle with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 5.5 seconds, just shy of district qualifying time of 2.05.00. Hanon and Sam Parks placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle. Brandon Richison improved his 200 individual medley time to 2.31.22, five seconds shy of a district qualifying time. Also in the 200 IM, Shayd Breckenridge swam to a fifth-place finish with a 2.54.66 and Josh Goodsell swam a personal-best time with a 3.20.37. Rigsby finished third with a time of 27.52 in the 50 freestyle, and Tanner Harrison and Downing swam their personal bests in 31.44 and 29.59, respectively.

Richison, Anderson and Harrison posted their best times in the 100 butterfly with times of 1.04.12, 1.28.74 and 1.40.83.

Connor Powers-Hubbard won the 100 freestyle in 52.68 while Parks and Downing swam their best times of 1.06.20 and 1.09.03. Hanon swam a tough race in the 500 freestyle to place fourth in 6.49.90 and Breckenridge was fifth in 6.54.23.

The 200 freestyle relay of Powers-Hubbard, Rigsby, Richison and Gustafson placed second with a 1.41.87 and Parks, Breckenridge, Severn Anderson and Downing came in fourth in a 2.08.02. In the 100 backstroke, Quaschnik placed third in 1.22.69 and Rigsby was fourth with his best time of 1.24.50. Goodsell placed fifth with a best time of 1.26.72. Powers-Hubbard won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1.06.66. Gustafson was second with a 1.11.87, just shy of district-qualifying time of 1.11.30 and Anderson was fifth with a personal-best time of 1.21.44.

The Spartans lost to Lakes 112-69 Jan. 19.

The Spartans’ league dual-meet season ended Tuesday with district rival Bonney Lake. Results came too late to post here. They head to the subdistrict meet Friday and Saturday in Auburn.
