SHS BOYS SWIM AND DIVE: Spartans post set of state times

A 105-81 nonleague loss to Lakes Thursday wasn’t as hard for the Sumner High boys swim and dive team to swallow since it posted two relay and two individual state-qualifying times.

A 105-81 nonleague loss to Lakes Thursday wasn’t as hard for the Sumner High boys swim and dive team to swallow since it posted two relay and two individual state-qualifying times.

The Spartans’ 200-yard medley relay of Zane Gustafson, Connor Powers-Hubbard, Trent Powers and Sam Rigsby scored their spot at state with a time of 1 minute, 48.28 seconds. The quartet also made the state cut in the 400 freestyle relay.

Individually, Powers-Hubbard raced to a state time in the 200 freestyle, while Gustafson reached his goal of an individual state appearance by posting a 1:06.84 in the 100 breaststroke. Powers-Hubbard, who has already qualified for state, won the event.

Neil Bateman earned his first district-qualifying time in the 200 freestyle event, and was close, .09 seconds, in the 100 freestyle. Rigsby posted a district qualifying time in the 100 freestyle.

Powers won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while teammate Sam Parks bettered his butterfly time while placing second.

State qualifier Evan Quaschnik won the diving competition.

The Spartans kept their league record clean by beating Steilacoom 115-71 Jan. 18. The team closes out the regular season Thursday, hosting Enumclaw and White River.
