Sumner High’s 5-0 cross country contingent dominated Steilacoom on a muddy Cascadia home course in Bonney Lake Thursday as the boys beat the Sentinels 24-31 and the girls obliterated their foe 18-55.

For the girls it was Gabby Phelps managing a first-place finish with a time of 20 minutes, 4 seconds. Nipping at Phelps’ heels were Abi Hensler, coming in second with a clocking of 20:20, and juniors Natasha Wilson and Robi Long winding up fourth and fifth at 21:48 and 22:30. Coming in sixth to close out the Spartan point-gatherers was Amanda Riley at 22:32.

The boys ran pretty close to an ideal race, according to coach Kristin Martin, as Coltin Tanner and Cory Brandt finished first and second, respectively, crossing the line with times of 16:51 and 16:52.

Not too far behind were Arturo Perez, 17:38, Reid Selmer, 17:39, and Shaun LaVigne, 18:06, who finished in sixth, seventh and eighth places.

The Spartans will attempt to close out their second consecutive undefeated South Puget Sound League 2A regular season campaign today, Wednesday, when they travel to White River. Then it is on to the Oct. 22 subdistricts at Fort Steilacoom.
