Sumner High’s girls soccer squad socked away its second consecutive South Puget Sound League 2A title last week, blanking Washington 8-0 Oct. 18 before defeating the Fife Trojans 1-0 in Thursday’s crown clincher.

The nail-biting triumph over Fife gave Sumner an untarnished 10-0 league record, while its closest competition, Fife, fell to 8-2.

The Spartans got their perfect week under way by blanking the Patriots. The onslaught over the 0-9 Patriot bunch was in little doubt from the meeting’s outset as Sumner poured it on to lead 8-0 at intermission.

The first tandem of tallies were unassisted and fired in by Kaylie Rozell and Sarah Carter, followed in rapid succession by two goals off the leg of Ellie Degoede, at the 10 and 18 minute marks of the first half. There were four more SHS goals recorded before the break, notched by Megan Fenton, Carter, freshman Rachel Stowell and senior Tayler Holtman.

Freshman Jamie Lange and junior Alex Hoyt were the netminders sharing responsibility for the shutout.

Thursday’s road encounter was the polar opposite of the game played at Sunset Chev Stadium two days prior. The Trojans, who have been nipping at the Spartan’s heels throughout the 2011 campaign, gave Sumner all the competition it wanted and more.

Five minutes into the second half, Ellie Degoede broke the scoreless tie, drawing first blood with a blazing fireball just out the reach of the Fife goalie.

The solitary score stood up as a stingy Spartan defense was able to keep Fife at bay.

The Spartans will be preparing strategies for a sterling second season, which commences at 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at Renton’s Memorial Stadium for a West Central District showdown against a foe yet to be decided.

The Spartans were granted a subdistrict bye and earned an unencumbered free pass to move on directly to the next level, the high-pressure district scene.
