The Sumner High volleyball squad reversed its fortunes as it first visited Enumclaw’s facility and lost 0-3 on Oct. 6, then on Thursday hosted Franklin Pierce and won 3-0 to notch its initial league conquest of the 2009 campaign.

The Spartans couldn’t get anything going on the road against an experienced Enumclaw group, losing 25-21, 25-14 and 25-23, but found comfort at home and crushed the winless Cardinals 25-18, 25-9, 25-13.

Sumner senior Kailey Smith was everywhere against the Cards, recording 32 assists. Katie Egbert and Sidney Erickson combined for 24 kills and Katee Hines managed five aces from the service line.

Sumner took its 1-2 league record and 2-7 overall mark on the road Tuesday to visit the winless Clover Park Warriors, with the results of that match coming too late to include here. Look for results at cmg-northwest2.go-vip.net/courierherald. Sumner will host Lakes at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
