Plateau grads
finish fifth for WWU
Plateau graduates Elise Averill and Sarah Henneford took part in a collegiate water polo tournament Saturday and Sunday hosted by the University of Washington at the Las Vegas Municipal Pool.
Averill, a 2005 graduate of Enumclaw High School, and Henneford, a 2005 graduate of Sumner High School, are captains of the Western Washington University women’s water polo team and are finishing their fourth year of play with the team. Averill and Henneford both played for their high school teams for four years and were high school team captains during their senior seasons.
Averill is the daughter of Bob Averill of Enumclaw and Claudia Johns of Kent and will graduate in June with a degree in exercise and sports science, specializing in pre-physical therapy. Henneford is the daughter of Dennis and Kathy Henneford of Sumner and will graduate in 2010 with a degree in environmental science.
The WWU Vikings competed against collegiate teams from the University of Washington, Cal State Chico, University of Arizona, and club teams Puget Sound Polo and Las Vegas Masters. The Vikings finished fifth with their lone win a 7-4 victory over the University of Washington. The Vikings lost 9-5 to Puget Sound Polo, 19-10 to California State University-Chico and 18-10 to the University of Arizona in Saturday’s action. On Sunday, WWU lost to the Las Vegas Masters team 18-8 before beating the Huskies 7-4.
Wolfpack hosting 2009 registration
Five Valley Wolfpack youth football and cheer teams are registering for play at Sumner High School. Returning players are asked to register between 9 and 11 a.m. May 2 and 6 to 8 p.m. May 6. Open enrollment is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 16.
There are the 89ers, usually for 7- to 9-year-old boys and girls; Sweet Peas, 8- to 10-year-olds; Bantams, 9- to 11-year-olds; Midgets, 12- to 13-year olds; and Pea Wees, 13- to 14-year-olds.
Each team consists of approximately 40 players. Football season starts Aug. 1 with practices from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday trough Friday. Once school starts practices are from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with games mostly on Sundays. The season runs from September through November.
Last year, four of the five Wolfpack teams made it to the championship round with two winning the league title and one taking “super bowl” honors.
The five team cheer squad is at all the games and competes at the end of the season in a all league competition. The Wolfpack squad won the all-around routine last year in the league competition.
Registration costs $135 per participant. All participants must provide a birth certificate. Football players must be present at registration to weigh-in for team determination.
Crush takes Yakima by storm
Sumner’s Crush, a 13U baseball team with members from Bonney Lake and Sumner, crushed the competition at the fourth annual Spring Fling in Yakima, Wash., April 3-5. The Crush started the tournament with an 8 a.m. contest and a 7-6 win over Thurston County’s Angels. Later in the afternoon, the team topped the Moses Lake Rivercats, 6-5 and by the final game on Day 1, the Crush picked up its third win, 4-1 over the Yakima Rebels, earning the No. 1 seed into the following day’s competition.
In the second day’s opener, the Crush beat the Thurston County Angels, again, 6-2 to move into the championship game where they met the Yakima Rebels, again. The Crush won the title with a 15-12 victory over the Rebels.
