The Sumner High football team claimed its second straight victory with a 41-34 shootout over Clover Park Friday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

In the South Puget Sound League 3A win, Sumner held off a late Warrior rally.

Down 41-20, Clover Park quarterback Tana Pritchard tossed two touchdowns to cut the lead by seven.

Clover Park scored on the opening kick on James Powell’s 93-yard run, then Sumner answered with Alex Griffith’s first of four TDs – a 29-yarder in the first quarter.

Griffith carried the ball 13 times for 113 yards.

Pritchard scored on a 70-yard punt return for the Warriors.

Griffith’s 3-yard run tied the game 14-14 at the end of the opening period.

Griffith and Pritchard scored for their respective teams in the second, but Sumner held a 21-20 lead at intermission as the Spartans blocked a Warrior point-after conversion kick.

Tyler Salisbury and Aaron Clark scored for Sumner in the third quarter. Salisbury reached paydirt on a 3-yard run and Clark scored on a 9-yard run for a 34-20 lead.

Salisbury rushed for 131yards on 24 carries, while Clark added 114 yards on 12 totes.

Griffith scored his final TD on the night on a 6-yard run in the fourth with eight minutes to go in the game.

Sumner closes out the season Friday against district rival Bonney Lake at 7 p.m. at Sunset Chev Stadium.
