Sumner Girls Tennis: Spartans take No. 1 spot in league after trouncing Washington High

The 3-2 victory took place at the beginning of a three-match week against Washington, Fife High and Clover Park High.

The Sumner High tennis team became the sole possessor of first place in South Puget Sound League 2A following a Tuesday face-off against Washington High School. The victory took place at the beginning of a three-match week against Washington, Fife High and Clover Park High.

The Patriots were defeated 3-2.

Miriam Tuma and Monica Mursch both played singles matches against Sora Yi. Tuma went 6-0, 6-1, while Mursch went 7-5, 6-2.

First doubles were played by Kyla Anderson and Jasmine Babcock 6-0, 6-2. Jessica Silone and Samantha Walsh played second doubles 6-1, 6-1. The match came down to a tiebreaker third doubles match played by Sarah Layton and Sydney Roberts, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.

Fife was defeated 5-0.

Tuma played first singles 6-0, 6-1. Autumn Jacobsen won 6-0, 6-1 in second singles.

Anderson and Babcock played first doubles 6-3, 6-1. Walsh and Silone played second doubles 6-1, 6-1. Layton and Roberts played third doubles 6-2, 6-2.

Clover Park was defeated 4-1.

Tuma and Jacobsen played singles, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-4, 7-5 respectively.

In first doubles, the Anderson/Babcock duo went 6-0, 6-0. Silone played with Stephanie Kjelland in second doubles, going 6-0, 6-0. Clover Park’s third doubles team won by default.

The Spartans play two matches this week and the league tournament begins this Saturday.
