In the world of South Puget Sound League 2A boys golf, White River High stunned league-leading Sumner Thursday, using a home-course advantage at Tapps Island for a 54-52 win.

The upset leaves four teams scrapping for the league title Thursday at the league tournament in Bremerton, where golfers’ point totals will go toward their hunt for the league crown and their stroke totals will determine their advancement to Tuesday’s state-qualifying tournament, also at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

“It was the perfect way to end a golf career, knocking off the league leader,” said WRHS coach Al Novak, who will retire from both his teaching and coaching position with the Hornets this year.

Sumner had the medalist, but White River huddled its golfers near the top for the victory. Zahn Brooks had White River’s top score at 43. Trever Anderson also shot 43 for 10 points. Ryne Petersen finished at 45 and Tanner Shertsobitoff at 46, both for 11 points.

Trevor Lubking earned 10 points for his 45 strokes.

In what Novak called their best performance of the year, the Hornets topped Washington 60-36 Oct. 5. Lubking and Shertsobitoff finished with matching 41s for 13 points. Peterson and Anders both shot 42 for 12 points and Brooks finished at 44 for 10.
