Sweetheart Wine Walk kicks off year
Sweetheart Wine Walk kicks off year
    January 19, 2009 11:10 pm

It’s a new year and our first downtown event is now only four weeks away. That’s right, our Sweetheart Wine Walk takes place on Valentine’s Day this year. If you’ve been to our February wine walks in the last couple of years, you know that it’s a fun way to celebrate a Saturday night with your sweetheart or a group of good friends. Of course from my perspective, the best thing about the event is all those people wandering in and out of our downtown shops and restaurants at an evening event. As they check their maps and lists of participating merchants, they can’t miss the local floral shops that are known for their unique and tasteful wedding flower arrangements or corsages and boutonnieres for the high school prom. Or the kitchen shop that has the latest handy gadgets for making sweets for your valentine, cookies or cupcakes for your third grader’s class or a three tiered cake for your daughter’s wedding. Thinking about handmade valentines, making a fancy dance card, or wedding invitations with your own personal touch? We’ve got the perfect paper specialty store to browse in for ideas.

See the picture of the goofy-looking guy that accompanies this column? Well, that’s nothing. You should have seen his first Costco card. Now, that photo was a masterpiece of doltishness. Unfortunately, I lost that card a couple of days ago – and that really bums me out. I will never be able to duplicate that spectacularly grizzled look again without the help of a Hollywood makeup artist…and a bottle of Scotch.

On Feb. 3 the future of Bonney Lake government will be determined in a special election based on Councilman Dan Decker’s petition regarding whether or not Bonney Lake should become a charter city or remain a code city.  If passed, the proposal is expected to cost the taxpayers of Bonney Lake hundreds of thousands of dollars to implement; current projects and positive improvements currently occurring in the city will likely be disrupted or delayed. Bonney Lake does not need a change, especially not another one initiated by Dan Decker.

The Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation expanded its mission in 2006 to support a wider base of health initiatives on the Plateau area, beyond the hospital. As a part of the expanded mission, the ERHF initially sponsored a health survey to identify the health care needs of our community through interviews, focus groups and community surveys. From this information, the first Health Summit was sponsored in September 2007, to bring together organizations, government officials and community members who were interested in improving the health of the Plateau community.

My job on Swell Rider, a 34-foot “weekender” type sailboat more suitable for island cruising than offshore ocean crossing, was delivery captain. Captain Hank Schmitt, owner of the crewing network business, Offshore Passage Opportunities, had organized three such sailboats, a 34-footer, a 37-footer and a 43-footer, for delivery to a charter business in the British Virgin Islands.
