Hornet cheer teams to state

Enumclaw and White River will be at the Feb. 2 - 3 state championship.

A third-quarter offensive outburst turned the tide Saturday evening and propelled the Enumclaw boys to a 68-44 victory over visiting Washington High. The Patriots walked into Chuck Smith Gymnasium with a lowly 1-16 season record but gave the Hornets all they could handle during the early going. EHS had a slim 29-27 halftime lead before romping to a 24-7 third-quarter advantage and never looking back. The win pushed Enumclaw’s record to 10-3 in SPSL 2A play and 12-6 overall. Don’t let anyone tell you no one reads the paper — EHS students held up the Courier-Herald when the White River basketball team was introduced during the Jan. 9 Battle of the Bridge game. Too bad White River had the last laugh, beating the EHS Hornets 51-46.

Only basketball scores for last week.

The Plateau’s prep gymnastics program is a joint affair, with girls from both Enumclaw and White River high schools making up the team. The gymnasts compete as a single entity during the regular season, then represent their individual schools once postseason rolls around. The program, under the direction of coach Ben Skipworth, has just two home meets this season. The first was on Dec. 15 at Peak Gymnastics. Pictured here are three members of the squad, all performing during the floor exercise: Julia Carter sets off across the mat for her final tumbling routine; Maci Roach points her feet to the ceiling as part of her routine; and Kylee Trudgeon strikes a pose to complete her routine. Carter is an Enumclaw High senior, Roach is a White River junior and Trudgeon is a White River sophomore. Photos by Kevin Hanson
