The Enumclaw School District is looking for someone to join its five-member board of directors.

Corey Cassell, an eight-year veteran of the board, recently announced his resignation. His departure, for personal reasons, was announced during the July 18 meeting of the Enumclaw School Board.

The candidate chosen to fill the District 3 seat will serve until the November 2017 general election; at that time, the replacement would have to run for office – and win – to continue serving on the school board.

The job of a school board member, according to the Washington State School Directors Association website, includes “strategic planning, policy adoption and budget approval.” The school board also makes decisions on things like bond and levy elections, facilities, curriculum adoption, employee contracts and transportation. A crucial part of the job is the evaluation, or hiring, of a superintendent.

School directors represent five geographical areas. District 3 includes some of the Enumclaw city limits – mostly north of Roosevelt Avenue, between 244th Avenue East and McKinley Street – and extends north into unincorporated King County. The rural portion of the director district has Southeast 416th Street as a boundary on the north, 236th Avenue Southeast on the west and state Route 169 on the east.

Anyone interested in applying for the Enumclaw School Board vacancy can call the district office at 360-802-7102 or 360-802-7109 to obtain an application and a copy of the director district map. A detailed district map also is available at www.enumclaw.wednet.edu.

Application are to be submitted to: Tina McGann, Enumclaw School Board president, 2929 McDougall Ave., Enumclaw, 98022. To be considered, application must be received by 4 p.m. on Aug. 8.

According to a school board discussion July 18, remaining board members will evaluate candidates Aug. 15 and interview finalists Aug. 18, with the top choice being sworn in during a September work study session.

Current members of the board are president Tina McGann, Nancy Merrill, April Schroeder and Bryan Stanwood.

Questions regarding the school board position or director boundaries should be directed to Superintendent Mike Nelson at 360-802-7103.
