In our modern age of everyday electronics, many items featuring clocks — such as cell phones, home computers and tablets — adjust themselves automatically. Many timepieces still do not: take one portable clock set to the right time and use it as a guide for resetting every clock in your home and automobile.

Wednesday, the Washington State Fire Marshal also issued a reminder to use March 10 as the day to check and change your smoke detector batteries.

“Smoke alarms most often fail because of missing, dead or disconnected batteries,” Charles Duffy said. “So maintenance is a simple, effective way to protect you and your family.”

Smoke detectors give households the critical seconds needed to escape an emergency fire, the media release read. Duffy’s office further urged families to prepare and practice a fire escape plan.
