McCann earns first Yellow Jacket title
Jackson McCann became the first Enumclaw Yellow Jacket, in its brief five-year history, to earn a junior wrestling league title.
The Kibler Elementary School student defeated Cody Coffee of Sumner 6-3 to claim the 8-years-old and younger, 69-pound crown Jan. 23 at Glacier Middle School in Buckley.
Trailing 3-1 in the final round, McCann scored a two-point reversal and a three-point near fall in the closing seconds for the championship.
Wrestlers had to place fourth or better in two division tournaments during the season to compete in the Jan. 23 tournament.
Yellow Jacket teammate Jake Treece finished second in the 9-and-older, 66-pound competition. Kidder McKee and Kyle Opland were fifth-place finishers for the Yellow Jackets. McKee earned his finish in the 9-and-older, 73-pound division, while Opland competed in the 9-and-older 69-pound category. Yellow Jacket Trevor Chase placed sixth in the 8-and-younger, 90-pound division.
Hernandez wins Level 8 vault
All three squads from Peak Experience Gymnastics in Enumclaw were in action Jan. 23-24 at the Great Wolf Invitational in Centralia, Wash.
Each member of Peak’s Level Four squad – Elizabeth Bozich, Elise Dunning, Erin and Hannah McGinnis, Willow and Leah Perry, and Ping Tan – participated in he first competition; the group scored well enough to place ninth among the 19 clubs at the meet.
Taylor Ansbaugh, Monica Estes and Sarah Wooten led Peak to an eighth-place team finish at compulsory Level 5.
The Optional squad garnered numerous places including Victoria Hernandez winning Level 8 vault and Olivia Bannerot taking silver medals on vault and bars, and bronze in the all-around at Level 9. Kelly Coyle finished third on vault, bars and Level 8 all-around and Tianna Johnston Bronze in Level 7 vault rounded out the honors for the Enumclaw contingent. BriAnna Reisinger and Nikki Wilson narrowly missed out on individual awards.
“We were pleased with the effort and happy that the girls had such a good time at this meet,” coach Hannah Holt said. “That said, we’ve got a lot of work and room for improvement ahead of us.”
Peak Gymnastics competes Saturday and Sunday at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Classic in Vancouver, Wash.
