White River High School senior Jamie Anderson won the Class 3A state javelin competition with a toss of 131 feet, 8 inches. With newly-crowned state champion leading the way, five White River Hornets returned home from last weekend’s state track and field championships in Pasco.
The most recent “Enumclaw Video Voters Guide,” a product of Enumclaw City Television, has won an Award of Excellence from the Alliance for Community Media. The organization’s “Best of the Northwest” video festival receive more than 100 entries from Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah, British Columbia and Alberta.

Brandon Strain and Crystal Stoneburner teamed up in a winning effort in Jack and Jill bucking. The White River pair sliced through their log in 13.72 seconds, besting another White River entry – Sarah Kelly and Peter VanNynck – by 1/100 of a second.
Marilyn Van Weiringen knows when they’re out there. Traffic in her neighbor hood slows to a crawl. Last week a herd of more than two dozen elk were grazing contentedly in the pasture that abuts her property on Southeast 456th.

Officials of the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest will formally dedicate a 120-acre seed orchard in memory of longtime forester R. Nevan McCullough. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. June 9 at the site of the seed orchard on Huckleberry Creek Road, just off U.S. Highway 410, 28 miles east of Enumclaw.
White River’s Sue Davis won her preliminary 200-meter race at the state track and field championships last weekend in 25.1 seconds – the fastest qualifying time for any participant. In the final, however, she pulled a muscle and finished in eighth place. The winner, Landreth of Mount Baker, took the state title with a time of 25.8.
Mike Belcourt took “Car of the Year” and “Best Detailed Engine Compartment” awards at the Enumclaw High School car show last week. His entry was a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro.

Behind the four-hit pitching of Larry Kelly, the Enumclaw High School Hornets last week managed to squeeze out the only run of a well-played baseball game to down a strong Auburn team 1-0 and capture the first Puget Sound League pennant in the history of the school. After a shaky start, coach Frank Osborne’s Hornets seemed to find their punch in midseason and came on strong to win the Southern Division championship of the league and the right to meet the Northern Division champions from Auburn in the playoff for the coveted championship of the PSL.

They all pronounced the contest “the greatest chance to earn money” they ever had.

Good news for water users during the summer months of June, July and August. Starting with this month, Enumclaw city water users will be allowed 200 cubic feet of extra water during each of the three summer months. This is to give property owners a chance to keep their lawns green during the summer months.
Excitement reigned in the ranks of local lawyers Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. when the awning at the offices of H.I. Dyle and B.R. Kibler caught fire. Someone accidently dropped a cigarette from the second story which proceeded to set the awning on fire.
