Five Years Ago

Mountain Meadow Elementary School teacher Cheryl Hillyer calls 82-year-old Stella Story “amazing.” For the past six years, Story had been volunteering her time to read with Mountain Meadow students. She, along with other mountain Meadow volunteers, was honored at a special tea Wednesday afternoon at the Buckley school.

Friday, Enumclaw NASCAR drive Kasey Kahne scored his fourth Nextel Cup pole and his second track record of the season at Pocono Raceway. In doing so, he became the first rookie to win the pole at Pocono, Pa.

Buckley’s Blaine Larsen signed autographs and met with fans June 2 at the Bonney Lake Wal-Mart. Larsen was promoting his debut country album, “In My High School,” which is available at Wal-Mart stores nationwide.

Ten Years Ago

June 16, 1999

Five Enumclaw High School girls were honored at a banquet June 4 with the prestigious “Towel Award.” Catherine Frerichs, Jessica Miller, Kristin Poe, Rose Robertson and Sara Short received the career athletic achievement award for earning a least six letters during their tenure as Hornets.

For the first time in 20 years the Crystal Mountain ski area will reopen the Green Valley Chairlift for summer skiing and snowboarding. The extended season will start June 26.

Twenty-five Years Ago

June 14, 1984

Albert Palmquist can tell you a lot about the pharmacy business. He can also tell you a lot about the history of Enumclaw. Al Palmquist opened the Sunrise Pharmacy here 50 years ago. Since that time, he has seen countless interesting developments in this town. Al can remember when Enumclaw had two newspapers – The Enumclaw Herald and Enumclaw Courier. He and his wife Helen can remember the Depression years when they would take those less fortunate into their home to feed them. He can remember when Enumclaw was a bustling town of 2,000 people around the time of World War II. But mostly he remembers the pharmacy business.

Fifty Years Ago

June 18, 1959

Probably the largest number of citizens ever to attend a session of the city council were present Monday night for the public hearing on Local Improvement District No. 79, a proposal initiated recently by petition of a majority of property owners in the north end of Enumclaw asking that approximately, two miles of rutted and pock-marked streets be paved.

The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company last week asked approval of the State Public Service Commission to reprice basic monthly telephone service. The proposal would cost Enumclaw home telephone users 35¢ to $1.05 more per month than existing schedules, according to Kick Edwards, Enumclaw manager.

Seventy-five Years Ago

June 22, 1934

The Rev. L.C. Laursen of Ryslinge, Nebraska, has accepted the ministry of the local Banish Church, and commenced with the local congregation on June 1. His family is now residing in the Banish parsonage.

The Krain Slavic Farmers and Citizens Club will hold their meeting Monday near the J.K. Shannon farm in Drain in a small building which will be used until the permanent hall is completed.

Marion Pohlman of Puyallup has been visiting at the O.R. Schubert home for the past week. Mrs. Schubert and Mrs. Agnes Ables spent Monday in Tacoma.

Reductions of $10 to $15 in list prices of 1934 Ford V-8 passenger cars and $10 to $20 in commercial cars and trucks were announced last week.
