The College Bound Scholarship is a financial aid program for seventh- and eighth-grade students. It is designed to inspire students to begin making their college and career plans without worrying about the cost of attending college.

Students sign a pledge promising they will graduate from high school, maintain a 2.0 GPA and be good citizens. In exchange, the state of Washington will pay for their college tuition up to four years or until the student earns a bachelor’s degree.

This four-year scholarship covers the cost of college tuition, fees, and a $500 stipend for books for low-income students who sign a pledge in seventh or eighth grade, promising to graduate from high school and demonstrate good citizenship.

The College Bound Scholarship provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of its cost.

Certain criteria must be met by students to qualify for the College Bound Scholarship. Students are eligible if they receive free or reduced-price lunch, receive benefits through Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF), and are a foster youth and meet the income standards.

Deadline to apply is June 30 of the student’s eigth-grade year. This year’s seventh-graders are advised to sign up this year, but have until the end of their eighth-grade year to complete the enrollment process. Students are encouraged to apply online at www.hecb.wa.gov/index.asp. Paper applications are also available at all middle school offices in the Sumner School District.
