Sumner baseball keeps hits coming

Sumner High relied on consistent hitting and a couple of unexpected pitching mound cameo appearances to prevail over Kennedy Catholic 7-5 Friday at Kent’s Russell Road Park. The game featured the No. 5 seeds from the South Puget Sound League 3A and Seamount League.
A four-run rally in the top of the fifth frame allowed the Spartans to tie the contest at five.
Then, the purple and gold scored one run in each of the ensuing innings, scoring the insurance run in the top of the seventh stanza when Cameron Steffey clobbered a triple.
Matt DeGoede did not strand his teammate, as he smacked a sacrifice fly to right field that enabled Steffey to gallop home.
The Spartans got off to a spooky beginning as Steffey got the starting nod on the hill and coughed up four Lancer runs, allowing Kennedy to bolt to a 5-1 advantage.
Seth Morgan took over, pitching in the third and fourth frames, giving up a solitary run. The Spartans rose from the ashes when relief artist Brady Cooper assumed the pitching duties and stabilized the Spartan ship, preventing Kennedy from scoring in the fifth or sixth innings. Alex Sloan traded his catcher’s gear in the seventh inning for the closer’s tasks and slammed the door.
Franklin Pierce was to be Sumner’s initial foe in the West Central District tournament Tuesday at Heritage Park in South Hill.
