Kevin Meines named new EHS Athletics Director

Kevin Meines has built a a career that includes years as a classroom teacher, a lengthy stint as a varsity coach and, finally, a time as director of athletics and activities at Tacoma’s Bellarmine Preparatory School.
Now, he brings that experience to Enumclaw High’s athletics and activities office. He has already made informal, unofficial trips to the campus and takes the reins in August.
The hiring came on the heels of Jenny Pugh’s announcement that she would be retiring at the close of the school year. Her final day in the office was June 16.
By going outside the district to land a new AD, the school district broke with recent tradition. Including Pugh, the previous four athletic directors had walked into the athletics office from an existing spot on the Enumclaw High faculty roster.
Pugh served since 2023; before that, the AD chair was occupied by Kody Dribnak (2022-23), Dave Stokke (20-22) and Phil Engebretsen (2013-20).
Engebretsen did not separate entirely from the world of Hornet athletics. After taking the reins as EHS principal he moved into district administration and now carries the title of Director of Facilities, Operations and Athletics.
Meines brings a bit of history with the Plateau to his new job. An Auburn native, he attended Green River College where he handled play-by-play duties for the Gators’ basketball broadcasts on radio station KENU. He jumped at the opportunity to lend his voice to Enumclaw High hoop broadcasts over those same airwaves.
He crossed the mountains to earn a degree from Central Washington University and, as part of that process, he did his student teaching in the White River School District. With degree in hand Meines landed his first professional job with Carbonado’s one-building, K-8 system. He then took a position with the Kent district before settling in at Bellarmine in 2003.
He taught at the private, Catholic school in Tacoma until 2019 when he became the athletic director. Most of those years also saw him coaching the Prep girls basketball team (2003-2017).
So, what brought him to the Plateau?
“I think I’m drawn to the community,” he said during a recent phone interview. “Enumclaw has always been someplace I’ve really respected.”
As an athletic director, Meines said, his job is focused on “putting the right people in front of kids and then supporting them.”
His initial task will involve observing the way things are done at Enumclaw High, he said. It’s a case of “what do you guys have in place?” and stepping in if he sees something that can be improved.
In the end, he said, what’s important is “to see kids follow their passions. That’s what brings me joy.”
