SHS CROSS COUNTRY: Spartans earn pair of victories

The Sumner High cross country squad traveled to Fort Steilacoom’s course to beat both Clover Park and Franklin Pierce by the forfeit scores of 15-45.
Crossing the finish line in first and second were Sumner’s Coltin Tanner with a time of 17 minutes, 53 seconds and Cory Brandt at 18:02. Also finishing in the elite eight were Jobe Layton, in third place with a clocking of 18:58, and Reid Selmer and Josh Goodsell with times of 19:03 and 19:07, respectively. Arturo Perez, running in his first cross country race, finished sixth with a time of 19:25.
The girls enjoyed similar success as Gabby Phelps was the first one to cross the stripe at 21:40 and in close pursuit was Tyeanne Lubking, second, 22:37; Leah Engelhardt, fifth, 22:52; and Natasha Wilson, sixth, 22:53.
A handful of boys on the team journeyed eastward Saturday to participate in Yakima’s Sunfair event.
Running in the heat in separate flights on the 3 mile course, Brandt recorded the fastest time at 17:58, followed by Tanner’s clocking of 18:05, Selmer, 19:06, Goodsell, 19:13, and Layton, 19:14.
